The SWJTU-Leeds Joint School is a new joint venture between Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) and the University of Leeds (UoL). The Joint School in Chengdu will award dual degrees in Computer Science, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and in Civil Engineering with Transport. The programmes are jointly taught in English by existing staff from SWJTU, UoL and others recruited directly for the Joint School, employed by SWJTU. The Joint School is committed to outstanding teaching and research across the natural sciences, engineering and technology.

The Joint School invites applications for the position of Lecturer/Associate professor/Professor in Computer Science.

The field of this position addresses Robotics, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a Lecturer /Associate professor /Professor, depending on his or her qualifications and career stage. The initial duration of this appointment is four years. It is possible to continue beyond this point.

The appointee will teach in the above mentioned areas,in the Joint School, located in Chengdu, China. Holding a PhD in Computer Science or similar, the appointee shall have excellent English language communication skills, and enthusiasm to teach at undergraduate level, with the potential to initiate, develop, and deliver high quality teaching, in English. Experience of teaching at undergraduate level is essential. High-level qualifications in scientific research are expected along with the capability to carry out research-based teaching.

The appointee will also be expected to engage actively in research in relevant areas. The research activities will be based in but not restricted to the School of Information Science and Technology. It is possible to have an adjunct professorship dependent on the capacity of the appointee.

Job Summary

Main purpose of the job: Teaching and Research. To give lectures, laboratory classes, and other teaching activities as needed for the SWJTU-Leeds Joint School. To conduct high-quality research in Computer Science within the context of the Joint School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

General:

Teaching and research mainly in the areas of but not restrict to: Robotics, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.

For appointment as a Lecturer: to support labs and development of curriculum, to supervise undergraduate individual projects. To carry out high quality research, to publish results of research and to bid for research funding.

For appointment as an Associate Professor: to support labs and development of curriculum, to supervise undergraduate individual projects, to win research funding, to carry out high quality research and publish results of research and supervise postgraduate theses

For appointment as a Professor: to support labs and development of curriculum, to supervise undergraduate individual projects, to win research funding to carry out high quality research and publish results of research and supervise postgraduate theses, and to provide academic leadership through international cooperation, planning and development of disciplines.

Person Specification

Essential: Experience in teaching in an English language environment. Research experience in an appropriate specialist area.

Desirable: Teamwork, Working experience in a multi-cultural environment, Experience in international cooperation

Students will be taught by highly respected academics that are experts in their fields. One third of teaching will be delivered by academics from the University of Leeds, typically carried out in short intensive blocks, with the remaining two thirds of the programme delivered by academic staff from Southwest Jiaotong University and the Joint School.

The University of Leeds will oversee the delivery of the programme, ensuring students at the Joint School benefit from an exceptional student experience that is similar to the experience of a student at the University of Leeds.

Programme structure

During the first year of study, students will undertake modules in English, Mathematics and Physics, giving a foundation that allows students to progress to the second year of their programme. Students will be taught in English throughout the length of the degree and will follow the syllabus of the corresponding course taught at the University of Leeds.

Students undertaking the dual programme have the option to study four years at the Joint School or two years at the Joint School followed by two years at the University of Leeds or three years at the Joint School followed by one year at the University of Leeds. Whichever option students decide upon, graduates will still gain a degree from the University of Leeds and a degree from Southwest Jiaotong University.
