I taught English in Romania and China and then completed and MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics in 2015 and a Trinity certTESOL in 2017. Within the first of these, amongst other things, I reflected on past teaching experience and best practice in the teaching of spoken English to Chinese learners, I looked at pragmatic change amongst young Chinese in compliment responses, and I completed a dissertation that was a qualitative, classroom-based study of motivational flow on a 10-week pre-sessional EAP course. Subsequently, I have taught predominantly pre-sessional English at several UK institutions including Nottingham, Edinburgh and Durham University. Having left China in 2014, I am pleased to be back in this diverse, eclectic, energetic country. I continue to enjoy teaching and hope to help my students develop their English and their own selves. Above all, I see it as a moral undertaking and whilst I don’t look upon myself as a great teacher, I do occasionally get things right.
