The SWJTU-Leeds Joint School, founded in 2015, is a partnership between the University of Leeds and Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), providing students in China with the opportunity to have exceptional learning experience in an outstanding educational environment. The Joint School is located at the Xipu Campus, SWJTU in Chengdu, China. Combining the prominent advantages of the British and the Chinese education systems, the Joint School cultivates students under four bachelor degree programmes, namely Civil Engineering with Transport (CE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EE), and Computer Science (CS). The Joint School now is seeking candidates for positions listed as below:


I.TENURE-TRACK PROFESSORS/ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS(YOUNG TALENTS PROGRAMME)

Job Description

Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor with expertise in four professional fields (CE, ME, EE, and CS). By giving full play to their knowledge, professional skills and overseas experience, the talents are expected to contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community, as well as strengthen the development of the students and the Joint School. The talents are expected to deliver courses in English, supervise Joint School students in research projects, contribute to various services at SWJTU-Leeds Joint School, and conduct academic research in teams at corresponding parent schools.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • possess a Doctor’s Degree and have minimum 2 years of postdoctoral research experience at an internationally renowned university or a research institution

  • be highly proficient in English and capable of delivering courses in English

  • major in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related fields with outstanding academic performance and potential

Employment and Management

The appointment is on a three-year fixed-term basis with the possibility of 3 years renewal (3+3 years) and with consideration for tenure within the 6 years. Besides, the contract is under a dual employment mechanism. The employed candidate is first of all a faculty member of the Joint School and shall also conduct research projects at another related academic school (parent school) during his or her“3+3 years” of employment. After due course, those young talents who are approved to be appointed as Tenured Professors/Associate Professors in the Joint School will be transferred to the corresponding parent schools of SWJTU, which matches their academic interests and where they are undertaking research projects. However, they shall continue to accomplish teaching tasks at the Joint School.

Remuneration and Supporting Package

Annual Salary: 300,000+ RMB for Associate Professors; 350,000+ RMB for Professors (before taxes). A range of employee benefits will be offered, including relevant national, city and SWJTU preferential policies.

II.FIXED TERM ENGLISH TEACHER

Job Description:

We are seeking applicants with interest in teaching English as a second language at SWJTU-Leeds Joint School. This post is expected to deliver high quality teaching to Year 1 students on English for Science and Engineering, as well as work with the faculty team in teaching and tutoring language-focused courses for Year 2 to Year 4 students. The recruited candidate will participate in assessment of students’ academic performance, and undertake academic research related to the post, especially in EAP, EMI and International Education.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • speak English as mother tongue

  • with TESOL, Cambridge ESOL DELTA ,EFL teaching qualification, or equivalent

  • with a Bachelor’s Degree or above,or be nearing completion of a DELTA (or equivalent)

  • with MA in TESOL, MA/ PGCert or equivalent in EAP, or MA in relevant field would be an advantage

  • with substantial experiences in teaching EFL and/or EAP & content at undergraduate level

  • be capable of developing or adapting materials to teach and make assessment of students’ performance at HEI level

  • be capable of applying the BALEAP TEAP competencies to teaching practice

  • with overseas experience of teaching EAP/ELT would be preferred

  • with experience of living and teaching in China would be preferred

  • with excellent cross-cultural communication skills

Employment and Management

This is a fixed term position for one year in the first instance and with the possibility of renewal.The recruited teacher shall work full time and is expected to assist English module leaders and co-leaders in organizing and managing teaching issues, and cooperate with faculty of Year 1 at the education activities of SWJTU-Leeds Joint School.
