Excitement and Insight: The Joint School holds Programme Inductions

On September 19th, 20th and 25th, a series of programme inductions for the cohort of 2024 at the Joint School were held.

Civil Engineering with Transport

Yue Huang, programme director, explored the essence of civil engineering in the induction. Chen Rong, deputy programme director, introduced the origin & development, scientific research platforms & results achieved of civil engineering of SWJTU. Representatives of academic staff and personal tutors joined the induction and provided valuable information on how to develop research interest.

Mechanical Engineering

Man Zhang, on behalf of Programme Director Qing’en Meng, introduced the mechanical engineering programme, including the curriculum, progress rules and employment prospects.

Tian Huaiwen, deputy programme director, started with the development of mechanical engineering at SWJTU, encouraging students to set goals and complete their studies diligently. Personal tutors for the 2024 cohort introduced themselves and their research interests, offering academic support for the new students.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering

Zhaopeng Zhang, programme director, shared the interesting British culture, beautiful scenery and campus life of the UoL before introducing the electronic and electrical engineering programme in a humorous, illustrative and impressive way. He encouraged the EE students to arrange their time reasonably in the School and enjoy college life.

Huang Deqing, deputy programme director, encouraged the new students by sharing his own learning experience to have ideals and study hard. Personal tutors Ge Peng, Shi Wenyuan, Song Yang introduced their research fields respectively, encouraging the students to join in their academic research.

Computer Science

Jie Xu, on behalf of Programme Director Zheng Wang, began the induction by defining computer science, dispelling the misconception that CS is solely about using the latest computers. He explained that computer science requires three essential skills: hardware understanding, mathematical modeling, and programming.

Yang Yan, deputy programme director, warmly welcomed the new students. Personal tutors Xing Huanlai, Zheng Danyang, and Li Ke introduced their research fields.

Materials Science

Zhilun Lu, programme director, started the induction by introducing the Bragg Centre of the University of Leeds named after the Nobel Prize-winning scientist William Henry Bragg. Then he detailed the curriculum of the materials science programme, emphasizing the study of physics, chemistry, materials, and other modules which are very important for in-depth study of the programme.

Jiang Xiaosong, deputy programme director, warmly welcomed the second batch of materials science students. He introduced the advantages and prospects of the materials science programme in terms of its disciplinary history, practice and innovation platforms and scientific research achievements in SWJTU. Personal tutors Cao Baobao, Zhang Song, He Liping, and Feng Guoqing introduced their own research backgrounds and academic accomplishments, hoping to provide guidance and support for the students.
